William L. Gibbons

Memphis & Shelby County District Attorney General's Office
William L. Gibbons has served as the Memphis and Shelby County,
Tennessee, District Attorney General since 1996. During his tenure,
he has focused the District Attorney's Office on the problems
of criminal gang activity, gun violence, illegal drug activity, and
juvenile crime.
Previously, Mr. Gibbons was the Assistant County Attorney for Shelby
County, Tennessee for 6 years, in addition to engaging in private
practice for 17 years. As Special Assistant for Local Government
and Urban Affairs to Tennessee Governor Lamar Alexander, he served
as a liaison with local governments, coordinated the Governor's
1979 Jobs Conference for Memphis , and organized the Jobs for Tennessee
Graduates program.
Mr. Gibbons' community, civic, and public service work spans
more than 20 years. Among many other achievements, he has cochaired
the Metropolitan Committee of the National District Attorneys Association
and been a member of the Tennessee Juvenile Justice Reform Commission,
Advisory Commission to the Tennessee Supreme Court on the Rules of
Criminal Procedure, Shelby County Board of Commissioners, and Memphis
City Council. Currently, he serves as a member of the Executive Committee
for the Tennessee District Attorneys General Conference, the Board
of Directors for the Memphis/Shelby County Crime Commission, and
Board of Directors of the American Prosecutors Research Institute.
Mr. Gibbons received both his bachelor's degree and juris
doctorate from Vanderbilt University .
